Welcome to the SJSU HFES knowledge bank. The knowledge bank holds helpful mnemonics, chapter summaries, and other information to help you study for that big test. It is maintained by the SJSU HFES student chapter, so feel free to add any knowledge you think would be helpful to your fellow students.

Recommended study format

Over the years, we have developed a method of group study which has resulted in a firm understanding of the material for all involved (and higher grades as a result). Here it is in seven easy steps:

  1. Start a class email list - Pass a sheet of paper around the class to gather the email addresses of everyone who is interested in studying
  2. Start a yahoo (or equivalent) group - Start a yahoo group with all the email addresses gathered in step 1
  3. Assign everyone a chapter - Assign everyone a single chapter (or section) which they are responsible for. Break up any large chapters into manageable pieces. (Note: We have found it is best to allow a day or so for people to grab chapters they are interested in, and then assign the remaining chapters to those who have not claimed one on their own).
  4. Summarize your chapter - Each person should summarize the important points of their chapter (using good human factors) and upload the summary to the group.
  5. Understand your chapter - Everyone is responsible for knowing the content of their assigned chapter well enough to explain it to the group.
  6. Meet with the group - Each person explains the important points of their chapter to the group. We have a No Man Left Behind policy. Everyone must understand the chapter before the group moves on. This may take either one or two meetings depending on the information density of the class. Note: Some group members prefer to skip this step (and only turn in the summary), but we have found that the members who attend the meeting score significantly higher on the test. Attending the meeting is recommended, but not required.
  7. Post to the knowledge base - After the meeting, add any mnemonics or summaries which were particularly helpful to this knowledge base.
